Welcome to the section of our web site where we tracked the progress of 2003 fall color through the Finger Lakes District - particularly in and around the town of Phelps.
| Week 1 |
The beauty of fall is behind us. What started with such great promise ended in a poor show as the region was bathed in almost nonstop rain throughout the peak color period. Unrelenting rain and wind drove the leaves to the ground and kept those who would view the colors indoors. Interestingly enough, the weeks leading up to peak color were beautiful. The occasional rainy day followed by 2-3 days of beautiful sunshine. Fall 2003 taught
us a lesson: If you know of good travel routes for viewing foliage, send your ideas to webmaster@theyorkshireinn.com.

Shot
November 23, you can see that there is very little left that is green except
for the grass.
We have had so much rain, even though the leaves are gone, the grass is
still going strong
Taken
October 18th, you can see how many of the leaves were driven to the ground.
The weather fluctuated wildly all week.
This
reference shot was taken on October 11th. The trees of the area seemed to
"pop" about October 9th. As beautiful as it is, we still haven't
hit peak!
The
sky has been gray and dreary most of the week. It seems like Hurricane Isabel
blew cold wet weather our way that refuses to leave.
The weather report for the 7th through the 10th is for clear skys and 60 degrees. I hope the weather man is right!
This
picture was taken the morning of October 1st. It rained the night before
and it was a beautiful crisp morning with an almost cloudless blue sky.
As you can see, select trees are in full color while the majority of the trees are only showing the slightest hint of change.
Recent wind and rain storms
have shaken a few leaves to the ground but we have had very little loss
so far.

Hurricane Isabel came through on Friday September 19th, this shot was taken mid day on Sunday the 21st.
You can see that we lost a few leaves from the Cotton Wood on the left side of the picture but overall the effects from the storm were minimal.
On
September 17th the colors are beginning to become more prominent. This picture
was taken about 8 am, with the soft morning light coming from behind. There
is still a mist in the distance.
Here
is our original reference shot, taken September 8th, 2003. This our front
side yard facing West from the parking lot.
